NASIIV1LLE. 5 A gentleman who left Nashville shortly after tha battle at Fi rt Donelson, communicates to the Mobile Tribune an interesting account of the evacuation and surrender of the city, a portion of which wo append ; The light nt Fort Donelson on the 13tb, 14th and 15th of February, was of intense concern to us, sr:d each dnj'a work down there wound up with the sialemtHit that the fight would bo renew tnl t i-iiiorrow. The fears that the fall of Fort Henry were calculated to inspire, bad ben w6ll (iigli di-elh;d by the way Fort Donelsou was holding out. It was? better located, and stronger in men anu guns. Pillow, Floyd and Buckner were there. Pillow had said let co:ne whai might, lie never would surrender the flacc, hdq Nashville folt that wecould not hlfjrd to lose that battle. Sat urday's wOrk was glorious. Oar citizens shouted ovor it. Many were saying, "I never liked Pil low, but forgive him now be is the man for the occasion." A sober, modest cit zjn, an old line WLig and ex Governor, was heard to say Satur day afternoon, on being asked how the fight went or. : "First-rate Pillow is giving them h 11, and rubbing it in." The dispatches closed on Saturday as they had for three successive days before "the enemy are expecting largo reinforcements," but we elept soundly and expected to have great news on the morrow. About i o'clock Sunday morning I rodo out into tbe Country seven or eight miles, ard leaving th turnpike, dined with a friend in one of the quiet and luxurious farmer homes of Middle Tennessee. Returning leisurely, I struck the pike about 4 P. M., and as everybody I bad met in the morning had asked me the latest news from the city, 1 asked the first man I met. Any news? Prepared to hear only of victory. 'News ! What's the last you've heard ?" "Last night's dispstcb.es." 'None fcinco? Tue last out and plenty of it. Fort D.nelson bas fallen and Nashville is sur rendered! They say the white flag is waving now on the Capitol and the gunboats will be up before sundown." . I thought net was hoaxing me, but quickened my pace. The next man confirmed it all and more. I saw there were literally a cloud of wit rietaos, pouring along the turnpike leading to Franklin. Convalescent soldiers, quilting the hospitals, were waddling along with their scanty baggage. Travelers in groups and squads, had left the hotels, carrying carpet bags and satchels, and saddle-bags . in i hand. The family of the owner of the omnibus line were rolling out in these vehicles. Double and fiehorso carriages were full of living freight. Carts and four-horse wagons. On reaching tbetoll-gate, on the top of the hill over-koking Nashville, 1 strained my eyes to see tbe white flag on the Capitol. Tbo lull flag-staff was caked. There was r.o flag of any sort ou it. Parsing down Broad street by the Nashvjlte and Decatur road, the first man I saw was Gov ernor Harris, al.ojt to leive on a special train, with the Legislature and archives of the State. Tho town whs in commotion. Over the wiro bridge that spans the Cumberland, General John ston's army were passing, taking the direction of the Murfreesbnro' turnpike. The fain of wag ons and soldiers reached out of sight, and did not get over that night. The sight of a withdrawing or retreating army is very disheartening. My residence is in Edgctield, a little village separated from Nashville by the Cumberland river. For several days General Johnston's headquarters had been established on that side of the river, and near me. ine laay witn. wnom he and his staff took their meals is my neighbor and friend, and tells me that the General opened the news to her at table in these words : " Madam, I take you to be person of firm ness, and t'ust vou'r neighbors are. Don't be alarmed. Last Dight my last dispatch, up to 12 o'clock, was favorable, and I lay down expecting a trreat victory to-dav ; but this morning nt 4 o'clock, 1 was waked by a courier, with the news that our forces at Fort Donelson were surround ed and must surrender. Thoy are not made of steel. Our soldiers have fought bravely as ever soldiers did ; but they cannot hold cut day after dav aeaintt fresh forces and fuch ouds. I cannot make men. Stay at home. Tell all your friends from me to stay at horrio. I cannot make a fight before Nashvuie, and fr the good of tbe city shall retire. 1 know General Buellwell. He is a gen tleman , and will not suffer any violence to peace able c'.tizens, or disturb private property. It might have been well if the General had is sued a nroclaroation. He, and staff crossed the bridoe that night at 11 o'clock. General Breck in ridge followed, and your correspondent follow ed soon af.er. Tbe question has often Jbeen akeJ, " Why didn't the people of Nashville make a stand? What! give up their city without Etnking a blow r The people were astonished and indignant at the way they were handed over to the enemy's mercy and occupation. Hut what could they do : When Generals and armed and dril'ed soldiers eivo up and retire, what can unarmed and undis ciplined citizens do before a f e advancing by land and water. " Throw brickbats at them," said one. Indeed! That would be well enough if the enemy would deal in the same missiles. The bones of General Jackson, the defender of New Orleans,, must have turned in his grave, at the Hermitage, a few miles away, at such a sur render. A few months before, on urgent call, every man who had a rifle or double-barrel gun bad brought it forward and given it up for army service. Not lifty serviceable gun3 could our citizens have mustered. No, not even pikes, though they had just enrolled themselves and resolved to have them made, and if General JohnBtonhad madea stand be fore the city they were resolved to stand with him. Sucof them as were not willing to be surrendered t j tbe uncovenanted mercies of Lin colndom, with the prospect of having the oath tendered them or the bastile, followed the retir ing army, As far out as Brentwood, Franklin, &nd Colum bia, some people are leaving their homes and sending off their slaves. Others, deeply-committed Southerners, stand and risk the consequences. They look for inconvenience and heavy losses, staying or going. In reply to the que.tion often asked whether any Union element has been devolved by these events; there was always some of this element in Nashville, but in very inconsiderable propor tion to the population. Lt Unionists bow their hands and heads now ; it is hoped they will. We have friends t enough left t watch them; and when the tide of war rolls back, tbe country wilt finally be purged of them, for they will have to leave with tbe Lincoln army. The great mass of Tennesseeans, especially Middle and West are sound; to the core and thoroughly aroused for the " first " time. They chafe utider tbe humiliation and disgrace of tbe surrender of their capital. Those that can-will move their families oat of the reach of immediate harm, and return to face the. foe on a hundred fields. The great baUle. of thU war are to be fought in the WL j This it but the beeinnini The people realise; now what is at stake, and ihcv will measure out wealth and blood with,; stint. aoul After taking my family a far as Decatur I re turned to Nash title Oh Wednesday. I ADDRESS MYSELF TO THE BRAVE and patriotic of North Carolina, who, though ex empt by law from military daty, prefer death to the conquest and domination of the lawless and tyranni cal enemy, whs i have invaded our soil, and are now driving our defenceless brethren from their homes, -This is no time for ' faltering or hesitation. It is the hoar of our cicfubtrj's utmost peril, and it behooves every one, ahie 'ta bear arm, no matter what his age, to arouse himself to a full and resolute performance of his duty asa man and citizen. If oar Indepen dence be achieved and established, no nation ever had a brighter, miojre glorious future than our people wiH be blessed with ; bat, if by inaction and cowardice, we suffer the :sjtar of that , independence to go down, no people were ever cursed with a darker night of social, degradation and civil bondage than we shall' be. Oar sons land brothers are alreadin the field prepared to meet danger and death for oar protection and that of our families, and te save us from, the hu miliating and cruel destiny, which the hordes ft. Northern barbarians have proclaimed awaits ns, in the event of our subjugation. Those sons and brothers have faced disease and)death, with alacrity, in defence of our commwa cause ! Then why stand we Idle? Is it less our dutfy than theirs to aid in this great mo mentous eon fiet? Would not our seal and courage, and our readiness to share their, tons and -sufferings, to participate !ih Hheir dangers, and- to die by their sides, nerve tbeiir iarm sand inspire their; hearts to deeds of daring ?
